‘Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises!’ A line from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which like so many other of his plays, is awash with sound and music. Each season, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra gives the centuries-old combination of theatre and symphonic music a new lease of life. This season, the programme includes one of the most fascinating plays the bard ever wrote: The Tempest. Love, revenge, intrigue and jealousy: the basic ingredients for a riveting story as Sibelius quickly realised when he received the commission to compose the incidental music to this Shakespearean play. De Roovers and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra present a fresh, new take on this landmark of world literature, linking it to a forgotten masterpiece from the symphonic repertoire.
